Give me S’more red, white and blue cake….please!

Here is a fun and easy dessert, perfect for the 4th of July weekend!
I made mine for Memorial Day weekend and it was a big hit!  I’m sure I’ll make another for the 4th.
What started out as two desserts, ended up being one !
Here is how it was done.
I started with (2) classic white cake mixes and food coloring – red and blue.
To ensure the “white” stayed really white, I just followed the egg white recipe on the back of the box.
I made three 8″ round cakes (1) white, (1) red, and (1) blue like this….
While the cakes were cooling I started on my S’mores.  You will need marshmallows, semi-sweet chocolate morsels, graham crackers and wooden skewers (I broke mine in half).
First I poured my chocolate morsels in my lil’ dipper (love this!).  I stirred every few minutes until all the chocolate was melted.
I assembled my marshmallows on skewers…

And crushed some graham crackers….

When I was ready I just simply dipped the marshmallow skewers into the chocolate, then into the graham cracker crumbs and set on waxed paper to “harden”.
After I asesmebled and frosted my cake, I thought how cute would it be to add the S’mores to the top of the cake, kind of like “fireworks”.  I tried a few and liked it.  Plus, we were heading to Cape Cod for the day and decided it would be an easier way to transport both desserts!

The cake was a big hit!  One by one the S’mores disappeared.

Then it was time to cut the cake!  We left the inside as a surprise.  I just love the “oooooo’s” and “ahhhhhh’s” when everyone sees the colors!

Have a safe and happy 4th of July everyone!
