A headboard/footboard made into a bench

Perhaps you’ve seen cute little benches floating around the internet like this….

Or on Pinterest like these.

They are made using a headboard and footboard.

So adorable eh?

I think so and really wanted to make one.

Maybe you remember this “Sweet Dreams” bed I refinished a while back ??

Got it for free on the side of the road.

Well, it didn’t go at the fundraiser I donated it to, so I ended up with an extra bed on my hands.

I was going to list the bed on Craigslist, but decided to go ahead and try to make a cute little bench myself.

So without being too wordy, here is the transformation and my spin on making a bed into a bench.

First I cut the footboard in half to use as the “arms” of my bench.

I used this chop saw

argh argh

I also cut about 9″ or so off of the bottom of each side, so I would be able to screw it to the flat, wide rail, not the spindle part of the headboard.

huh ???

Here’s a picture of what I’m trying to say….

Next I used brackets to attach the bottom slats to the headboard like this…

I attached 1″ x 4″ boards horizontally and a 1″ x 6″ board for the front part of my bench.

I also added a 2″ x 4″ to the center of my bench for extra support.

Next I added 1″ x 4″ boards vertically, I used finished nails to attach these

I primed and used outdoor paint to paint my bench.

The color I used from Glidden is called Oyster Shell.

I also glazed the entire piece using Ralph Lauren glaze in Smoke.

{ I haven’t poly’ed my bench yet, but plan to }

I used Lindsay’s transfer method to add an “M” to the back of my bench.

Then painted it using acrylic craft paint.

I made a trip to Joann for foam and outdoor canvas fabric to make my seat cushion and a bunch of throw pillows.

I wanted browns, greens and blues and that’s exactly what I found.

I love mixing patterns don’t you ??

So what do you think ??

I really love how it came out and it looks really cute on our deck.

I look forward to lounging on this bench and reading a good book.

As a matter of fact, I may do just that later today!

I’m on the third Hunger Games book ~ Mockingjay, totally addicted.

But I’m not gonna lie….

I want to see what all the hype is with this book.

You ???

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. so this is the project you were telling me about?  I love it so much.  The pillows are great too, did you make those?  Do you have the Hunger Games book, Lex wants to read it.  Yes, I am interested in reading about Mr. Grey, the hype is all I hear so this little lady may need a little spicing up in her marriage!!

Yes, this is the project. Thanks. Yes, I did all of the pillows, 12 in fact the day I made the cushion, I went a bit pillow crazy. I found some awesome remnant fabrics so I went around my house re-covering pillows that had been sun-bleached, etc. and BOY what a difference a pillow can make!

I do have all three hunger games (the last one is Jenn’s). Mikey is interested in finally reading the first, which in my opinion has been the BEST. Especially since we bought it for HIM over 2 years ago!

  2. Wow, you never cease to amaze me!. Your bench is beautiful!

  6. Love, love, love your bench! I was looking up how to do this and came across yours. Your step-by-step pics are a great help. If I get around to making one I’ll post one. Your fabric choices are great too.

I love your bench. I have an antique metal headboard and was “browsing” the web.
